Recreation in the Frisian Wehde and surrounding area

The Friesische Wehde, the special holiday region in the district of Friesland on the North Sea, comprises the towns of Bockhorn, Zetel and Neuenburg. In the north-east, the Frisian Wehde borders on the Jade Bay (North Sea) and in the south-west, a beautiful heath and moorland landscape forms the border with the district of Ammerland.

Recreation is a top priority in the Frisian Wehde. Enjoy the marvellous Frisian landscape with its picturesque villages. The heath, the primeval moor, the primeval forest, the wide marshes, ebb and flow, the unforgettable North German sky, shimmering watercourses, waving cornfields, remnants of old monastery farms, hedges, fences, old farmsteads but also modern residential areas, restaurants and cosy pubs invite you to linger.

To give you a few ideas for your stay in our hotel, we have compiled the following information for you. You will see that you will never be bored here.

Neuenburger primeval forest

Famile wandert im Urwald"Wehde" is an old Low German word for forest and is a reference to the centre of this region, the unique Neuenburger primeval forest. It harbours ancient and original trees. Many paths run through the Neuenburg primeval forest and the well-signposted junction system invites you to take long walks. You should definitely visit the hunting lodge and nearby 850-year-old oak tree, which fell in June 2014. For further information, please visit the corresponding page of the municipality of Zetel. The hiking map for the Neuenburger Urwald forest with the junctions is available free of charge from reception. Directional signs and information boards at the junctions make a hike through the primeval forest both educational and exciting.

Cycling holiday

RadFamilieXSmallSaddle up and discover our beautiful region on well-developed and signposted cycle paths. Use the uction system, to cycle along themed routes or simply put together a route according to your own wishes. This is child's play with the junction system. But remember, we may be in the flat countryside, but the sometimes stiff breeze on the dyke can feel just as much like cycling up a mountain. And one thing is certain here: the stiff North Sea breeze always blows from the front. You can obtain maps of the junctions from us at reception.
Perhaps you would like to cycle round the Jade Bay? In the summer months, this beautiful tour is possible with the bicycle ferry between Wilhelmshaven and Eckwarderhörne. But make sure you organise your tour to suit the ferry times.
The "Tour de Fries"passes through Bockhorn, a tour that runs through the entire district of Friesland and also passes through junctions.
The neighbouring Ammerland parkland can also be explored by bike from our hotel on the 15 themed routes.
As a guest of our hotel, you can store your bicycles safely in our bicycle garages free of charge. There are sockets in the bike garages where e-bikes can be charged. Rental bikes, including e-bikes, are also available for hire to our guests.

Things to see in Friesland

erlebnisbadThere is a lot to discover in Bockhorn, for example the St Cosmas and Damian Church, which towers over the market square, or the heated outdoor pool with water slide and mini golf course in the summer months. Take a look at the information pages of "Naturerlebnis Südliches Friesland" to see what there is to discover and explore here. There is sure to be a suitable destination or a great activity for everyone.
Twice a year, things go haywire in Bockhorn. In summer, on the 2nd weekend in June, the "Bockhorner Oldtimermarket" takes place, which is well-known far beyond the region. More than 6,000 historic vehicles, from racy sports cars and exclusive luxury limousines to robust motorbikes, heavy commercial vehicles and rustic tractors, are presented in an idyllic park landscape. Over 20,000 visitors find their way to Friesland on these days.
Then in autumn, on the 2nd weekend in September, Bockhorn heralds the start of the market season with the "Bockhorn Market". In addition to attractive fairground rides, show and sales stalls, the market also offers a large parade on the opening day with floats and pedestrian groups accompanied by music groups. And good to know: There is no closing time in Bockhorn on these days.

City Tours

The nearby towns of Wilhelmshaven, Oldenburg, Leer and Emden are ideal for day trips. Papenburg with a visit to the Meyer Shipyard, where the large cruise ships are built, is also a popular destination for excursions. Bremen, Bremerhaven and Cuxhaven are also worth a day trip.

Beaches on the North Sea

Fine sand, green dykes, dunes and the Wadden Sea, in this region we have many different beaches that invite you to relax or enjoy sporting activities. No matter which beach you choose, the view of the beautiful nature of the Wadden Sea is always there with you. The Wadden Sea off the North Sea coast of Lower Saxony has been protected as a national park since 1986. With an area of around 3,450 square kilometres, it is the second largest national park in Germany. It is also a UNESCO biosphere reserve and part of the UNESCO Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. Low tide and high tide determine the rhythm of the day here.
The closest beach to us is in the artistic North Sea resort of Dangast on the Jade Bay. Depending on the tide, you can go straight from the beach into the refreshing water or have a mud fight in the mudflats, which is particularly popular with children. There is also plenty else to discover in Dangast. Boat trips on the "Jantje von Dangast" to the Arngast lighthouse or to the seal banks are particularly popular in summer.
Continue to the south beach in Wilhelmshaven, the only beach on the North Sea coast of Lower Saxony that faces south. Please note that, unlike the other beaches, there is no sandy beach here, but a stone-paved coastal strip with a sunbathing area.
The Hooksiel beachis recommended for water sports enthusiasts. A beautiful sandy beach that is popular with kite surfers. All sports enthusiasts get their money's worth at the water ski centre and there is plenty on offer here too.
Further along the coast is the beach in Horumersiel. Behind the dyke, the huge green beach of kilometre-long meadows with many beach chairs and a variety of activities for young and old awaits its guests.
Also located in Wangerland, you will find the beach in Schilligin the north. As in Hooksiel, you will find many kite surfers and other water sports enthusiasts here. However, the vast dune landscape is particularly special here.

East Frisian Islands

Day trips to one of the islands of Wangerooge, Spiekeroog, Langeoog, Baltrum, Norderney, Juist or Borkum are very popular. These offer beautiful wide sandy beaches, dune landscapes and opportunities for cycling and hiking. Each island has its own charm and can be reached quickly by ferry or aeroplane. You can obtain the "Inselhopser" with all the ferry connections for your planning from us at reception.
